Work Conditioning

After an injury on the job, it is important that the employee is in good condition, and truly prepared to get back to work. Injured workers benefit from physical therapist services from the onset of injury through their return to work. Many patients who receive appropriate early care return to their job without additional rehabilitation services. For those who are not able to return to work due to unresolved physical problems following acute care, the treatment focus changes to restoration of work-related function—a process called work conditioning.

Work conditioning addresses the physical issues of flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, and work-related function for the global outcome of return to work. The length of the program can range from two to six weeks.

Whether the injury was to the back, knees, feet, legs, hands, shoulders or other part of the body, our physical therapists can create a program to assist the employee to recover, and to work properly in the future. Getting involved at once when an employee has begun to show signs of injury can be of great benefit, as a program that improves their condition early can save them from the risk of permanent or long term injury. An individual program to increase flexibility, improve strength and endurance can be highly beneficial. It is essential that the worker is safe to return to the job, and our work conditioning program identifies any area of weakness with the objective of restoring function so that the employee is once again safe to return to work, whether in their original job or in performing another function at your business.

Returning to Work After an Injury

Work conditioning is valuable to an employer to determine if an employee is truly ready to return to work, and the employee is taking an active role in the process. Work conditioning includes an individually created program that reflects the actual functions of the job. A safe return to work is extremely important. Injured workers that cannot safely perform their job duties can put other workers at risk, and a program of work conditioning can assist your company to avoid a disastrous injury accident.

The process involves our therapists fully understanding the tasks that the employee will be performing, and creating a set of exercises and activities to increase endurance, flexibility and strength. These exercises are graded – they start simple and increase in difficulty as the employee recovers their strength. This process can be of great value to an employer who wants to ensure that a worker is truly prepared to return to work. In many cases, when an injured worker is returned to their duties without a full work conditioning program completed, the way the individual performs their job leads to more problems and further injuries. We prepare the employee and ensure that the actions they take are performed correctly, based upon their condition.

Why Work Conditioning is Important

Why is a work conditioning program so important? If a worker is not using the body correctly, or there are weaknesses that are continually being compensated for, there will be problems in the future. Being trained to correctly perform the tasks is extremely important, as the employee may have been injured due to a failure to use their body correctly when doing the job, which led to the injuries. We educate, train and involve the employee in their recovery, and we are focused on getting results within the time limits of the program. Our professional treatment team can discuss your needs with regard to employees that are preparing to return to work after an injury.
